In 2011 Richard Christie and I qualified for the Innersection film. Being the only Kiwi presence in the film we decided to do all of our filming in NZ. Incidentally all of the surfing footage is shot on the East Coast of the North Island. At times we were limited by surf conditions, short daylight hours and abrasive weather patterns, but we persevered and came up with a clip that we were happy with. After we had qualified no major surf spots really fired in the timeframe we had, but we still found some pretty fun waves that showcase Richards surfing along with our corner of the world. Call us proud Kiwis.
We went to the Rotorua region and shot the intro which was a pretty cool experience. The team at the Tamaki Maori Village were amazing hosts and allowed us to shoot the intro at their facility. They also arranged for us to work with two performers – Brennan and Raumiria, who became an integral part of our intro and helped shape our clip. We then shot some lifestyle/themed shots around the region including at Orakei Korako; a world of gushing geysers, hot springs, bubbling mud pools and some of the largest and most amazing silica terraces in the world.
This version is a directors cut . It is 90% identical to the version in the Innersection film, but with a few tweaks and swapped out waves.
The majority of the video was shot with a canon 550D, with a 50mm f1.8 canon lens used for lifestyles, a Sigma 150 – 500mm for surfing shots, and various canon lenses at other times. About 1/4 of the surfing was shot on a Sony Hvr-V1p.
I shot all of the footage apart from the following:
